Checker Yellow Cabs was introduced to Calgary in 1984 when it was realized that taxi service in Calgary was in serious need of improvement. Deciding to emphasize quality and service, Checker started with twelve full-sized luxury sedans, with drivers attired in suits. The name "Checker" was chosen for its continent-wide identification with taxi service, not because of an association with any particular vehicle.
In Calgary, the Taxi Industry is regulated by the City of Calgary Livery Transport Services and therefore all taxi cabs follow the same rate structure.
